Michigan Outdoor News, Nov. 11--Editor Bill Parker reports that, "Beginning this spring, Michigan will have a catch-and-immediate-release bass season. DNR Director Becky Humphries signed the order establishing a C-I-R bass season, beginning the first Saturday in April, at last week's Natural Resources Commission meeting in Roscommon. Bill has more to say about that in the column if you want to read the editorial. I couldn't find a link to it on their website but you should be able to get the paper at various locations around the state. Wait a sec...does CIR begin the FIRST Saturday in April or is it the LAST Saturday in April? Both are sweet, but the first Saturday is sweeter!

That would be nice, but... Bill had that same typo in an earlier issue. Unfortunately, it is the last Saturday in April same as inland Lower Peninsula opening day for trout, pike, walleye.
We were not able to get the Great Lakes issue resolved, so they also open the last Saturday in April. Still a lot better than many thought we would get and much better than what a handful of overcautious MDNR fish biologists originally wanted us to have. In the end, we had a much better handle on what Michigan anglers wanted than they did, and the available science really is on our side.
It's definitely a great start though for all Michigan bass anglers to get more fishing opportunity as we'd been asking for. We are still behind most of the rest of the country, but you have to start somewhere and see what happens, and how the bulk of the anglers take it.

This is something that should have happened a long, long time ago. I am looking forward to 2006. That means more trips to St. Clair early in the season.....at least for me. That makes me very happy and excited for next year. My hat is off to all those who did what they did to get it done......Especially Dan Kimmel. Way to go Dan. Someday I will get the chance to meet you and shake your hand for all you did to get this initiative through. GREAT JOB!!!!! ;D

You're welcome and thank you for understanding what we were missing. I think a lot of us will enjoy next spring, but some of us may enjoy it just a little more...
I appreciate all your great posts too. Thank you!
