Despite last year's lackluster attempts by me to catch some US Detroit River walleye, it looks like Sunday may be too nice a day to not head over and try again... but not too early.

I believe Sunday may be the maiden voyage this year for me as well. Look for the Stars and Stripes in the Trenton Channel. I will probably go out of Wyandotte.

MadWags, I'm meeting cameraguy at about 10AM at his house (I'm not getting up to early yet). We went out of Wyandotte last year. Have to see if there's room there or go down to Elizabeth by then. We'll be in a white Champion bass boat with red stripes and a 200 Mariner. Not sure what secret hot spots he'll take me to this year although I hope it isn't the sucker hole or the plastic bag hole this time... We'll be somewhere between the power plant and the plants just South of Ambassador. I'll keep a lookout, but you know all those walleye boats look alike ;D Shane, walleye aren't really that hard to catch (except for me in the Detroit River in the spring apparently ) since I usually catch them on tubes and various lures all over the place. If they're around, they usually aren't real tricky. There's walleye in Kent Lake. Some are caught from shore in the spring. There's some big walleye in Cass too. Of course, St. Clair is full of the darn things. I catch a bunch there. Keep in touch here and one way or another, you'll probably get some walleye (although jumbo perch are nice too).

Shoot! Thanks! I hope Wyandotte isn't full when we get there...
Hopefully, cameraguy has a backup plan. He's been too busy to get on the web much lately. I'm still not going to get up too early. I'm not in 'tournament' form yet and these are 'just' walleye, right? Hope to see you on the water.

It was fun seeing you try to catch walleye Dan. Hey did you catch one? My nephew never even got a bite. He may have the same issues you have. Logs vs Hogs

Man oh man! Apparently I can catch walleyes everywhere (even Arkansas) except the supposedly world-class Detroit River!!!!!!!! The best I did was a small piece of material suspisciously like nylons (shortly after I said something about putting a bunch of small minnows in nylon like you do salmon eggs! Weird. Mark got his hawg early and ended up with 3 total nice ones after breaking off that last big fish by you guys. I'm not really sure if I even had a bite. (I think he front-ended me, but I'm not sure how to tell in walleye fishing?!) Oh well, the big ones are starting to bite. You got your BIG lean mean sow. Mark got the little bit shorter, but FAT 'balloon-belly' and those walleye 'pro' guys got their 3 bigs ones all near the Steel Plant (I hope I'm allowed to say that... I didn't ask cameraguy). He caught his on 3/8 to 1/2 round jigs with just the body (no tail) of a 5" chartreuse Kalins matching the head and a 4 or 5" minnow virtical jigging. I tried similar a quite a few other things, but not the exact same as him for my nylon in case anyone wonders. Here's cameraguy's (Mark Gomez) jelly belly (the walleye I mean - almost 8 1/2 pounds): Guess I'll stick to bass tournaments!

Who are you callin' a "jelly belly"? I do need to lose a few (dozens) pounds, but sheesh.
Oh, you meant the fish. Right.
I'm jealous of MadWags' photo--sharp, clear and colorful. I guess I'm going to have to break down and get a real digital camera instead of using my video camera to take stills. I should have used my film camera to take a couple, as well. It has a cool "fill-flash" that makes the subject "pop", especially on such a dreary day. I guess I have to wait until Dan's pix are developed.
And NO I don't mind telling where we were. It's no secret spot. In fact, I'm surprised that there weren't more boats there. I guess it's still a little early for some people to be out fishing.
Hey, don't give up Dan! You're going to get one anytime now. Maybe in the next couple of weeks.

cameraguy is HERE at last! Where you been?
Okay, I really know. I just have to get back somehow for being front-ended on the River. ;D
Don't worry cameraguy, with my special wide-angler lens, you'll have outdoor writers calling you to ask about your new potential world record! (Richard Simmons may call too... price you pay for the 'special' lens.)
As slow as I am though, my film may not be posted until next year since I'm still low tech and probably shot slides. I should have used a flash, but my fingers were cold.
Next time, I'm bringing a gillnet... chartreuse of course. ;D
(Shoot, I had to come back and edit this. I HONESTLY did not mean "wide-angler" lens - that's me. I MEANT 'wide-ANGLE lens. I'm not making this up. Sorry Mark.)

If I remember right, you'll be fishing a bunch soon, won't you? The Saturday after Easter is looking like a good fishing day for me so far.
