Andy I use a Castaic SF mostly for pitching and it is a smooth reel. The thumb clutch, which may be handy to some (pun intended) just doesn't do it for me. I still use my thumb to feather and stop the spool and then engage the reel normally. I have also used my Curado SF and it is a dandy too...

The Castiac is a GREAT reel for flipping/pitching for heavier lines !!! I have the older Castiac that has the thumb bar all the way across. I DO NOT like the new Castiac with the thumb "tabs" on the sides. The japanese equivalent is a Scorpion Qucikfire, the older model which is White has bar all the way across and new model which is wine colored has new version of thumb "tabs". Also, you can get a conversion kit for a new Scorpion Quickfire to put a thumb bar across. They mention it at www.japantackle.com but I don't own one so don't really care. HOWEVER, for pitching tubes abd light finesse jigs , YOU CAN'T BEAT a Shimano Scorpion 1000 (RH) / 1001 (LH). I use mine with 12 lb Fluoro XPS and love it for pitching tubes. I bought mine from www.profishing.net and got it in 4 days from Japan. Service work is done by a tackle shop in Indiana, Buck Creek Rod and Reel. I've had mine for 3 years with no problems. You can find all these reels on Ebay but do NOT buy Scorpion 1000 on Ebay. I've seen guys pay $20 - $30 more on EBay because they don't enough research. Take a look at www.profishing.net or specialtytackle.com.. Any questions, email me... Ckev

Thanks Ckev Im still up in the air on this flippen and pichen thing.I have a full line up of Shimano's on my other rods but realy need something for worm fishing and jigs,I do this with 20lb mono. I have not had a real with a flipping thumb bar for quit some time so I'm thinking it will be easyer to get use to it.

You probably will be okay but try out the new version of the Castiac first. If you go through a local shop, maybe they will let you try it out for a week in backyard ??
I know D and R over here in Kalamazoo, doesn't have any out. I think it was Cabela's were I played with one.
Good Luck Ckev
