When switching from 12 volt to a 24 volt trolling motor is there anything I have to change except the way I hook my battery up? Or do I have to re wire from the plug?
Thanks, Mike

Well it all depends on how your console is wired. If it's a simple 2 wire setup, then all you need to do is wire 2 batteries in series from that plug and you should be all set. When you're done wiring the batteries, put a volt meter on it (AT THE PLUG) and make sure it registers 24 volts. If so, you're in business. Check out this link to see a diagram of how to wire for 24 volt. If you don't know how to properly wire the batteries, consult an experienced professional. Wiring the batteries improperly can be dangerous. www.motorguide.com/uploads/196/32/2003_owners_book_.pdf

Like tom said if it's a 2 wire set up your ok. Some boats have a 3 wire set up for the 12/24volt motors, the third wire is usually orange(mine has that). The only problem you may run into is that the wireing in your boat is too small to handle 24v, but I doubt it 24v is not that much.

I wouldn't make the switch unless you have six gauge wiring from the batteries to the motor.

The boat is a Tracker TX17..Its a pretty heavy wire gauge. The plug has 3 wires but only 2 are used. I have the whole front casting deck on my boat tore off for re carpeting so if I have to re wire its not a big deal. Thanks for the help and wiring diagram! Mike

If it has 3 wires, it's likely setup to accomodate a 36v system. You'll probably be ok, you only need to use 2 of the wires for a 24 volt system.
