When i went to Bass Pro Shops last Wednesday, I only had one thing in mind. I was there to buy a few Lucky Craft Pointer 100s and then be on my marry way. Well, we all know that it never works out like that when we walk into a store like Bass Pro Shops.
I grabbed the pointers but couldnt fight the urge to browse for a bit. Thats when i came across the new Rapala X Rap!
The first thing that came to mind when i seen this sleek new bait was WOW! thats a good looking minner. I read the back of the package and realized it was a suspender, so i picked one up in the olive green color.
The bait slightly resembles a hi tech japanese stick bait, but still has that Rapala look to it. It comes complete with a very detailed finish and ultra sharp hooks. And they are not claiming it a jerkbait, but rather a 'slash bait'.
Upon the first cast with the new Rap', slash bait made perfect sense. I dont think i have ever seen another stick bait with this type of action. the bait literally head thrashes like an angry muskie, then glides to a stop and suspends perfectly. it took me a little while to figured out some of the baits tricks, but oncei did, the fish started hitting it. actually, they were really hitting it.
I had been using a lucky craft earlier, and was catching fish on it in good numbers, but they werent really nailing the bait, more or less i would just feel weight on my line after a pause. But with the X Rap, I would actually feel the line jump as if it was hit by a truck going 50 mph.
I think this bait would be even more effective in the spring time. The action of the bait just screams 'eat me'.
Now on the down side, the bait does not cast as well as some other stickbaits, especially in the wind. It also has a tendency to roll every once in a while. But if you can deal with that, it is a great bait, easy to work, and lots of fun to use.
I give it 4.5 out of 5 lbs ;D
