Pflueger is really getting back into the full spectrum fishing reel business with some awesome new reels for 2005. I have several models of the new ones to use that are beyond impressive.
I got them recently and was immediately impressed just with the packaging. I always figure people like to buy things that look nice from top to bottom. These reels look great!
What impressed me more though was how smooth they are. Anglers may buy one because it looks good or is recommended by someone they trust, but they won't buy more if the quality isn't there.
The quality is there! I pressed the thumbar on the new President WLPL casting reel out of the box and the spool rotated around on its own for over 4 seconds! I spun the empty spool by hand and it rotated for 12 seconds! That's what 10 bearings (9 are double-shielded stainless steel) will do for you.
The reel has a Titanium line guide and an anodized machined aluminum spool with strategic holes for weight reduction. Despite holding 160 yds of 12 lb test line and having a tough metal frame, it weighs only 9.4 oz. It fits the hand real nice too.
My reel pictured above, the President WLPL has a 6.3:1 retrieve ratio and I really love the drag wheel - it has wide flat edges to make drag adjustment incredibly easy at any time. This is the left-hand version which I use a lot for jerkbaits and topwaters among other things.
I've always been very partial to the old round casting reels and Pflueger is meeting the needs of anglers like me by offering their Trion machined casting reels (one piece aluminum frame and side plates). They come with 6 bearing - 5 stainless steel and a variety of widths along with 2 left hand models. They also have a Titanium line guide.
It's a very attractive tough reel. I got the PFL Trion 56 which has a large capacity that I plan on using for larger crankbaits in heavy cover and for flinging big spinnerbaits over large distances (think big flats smallies on St. Clair) on the rod pictured here - a Team All Star 7' glass crankbait rod - the TAS 846GCB.
Being slightly into Great Lakes smallies, I appreciate a nice spinning reel. I really appreciate the Pflueger President 6735 spinning reels. Ultra-smooth with 10 bearings including 9 stainless steel ball bearings. I really like the Titanium lip on the long cast aluminum spool and the Titanium line roller. Those big smallies are hard enough on your line without the reel adding to it.
The body is a combination of graphite and metal for a balance of strength and light weight. I like the machined aluminum handle - it looks like it will last forever. All makes for a very sharp looking reel which probably explains why it comes with a nice drawstring bag to protect the reel when you aren't slamming the hook into 5 pound smallies.
The Pflueger President 6735 makes a bass fishing machine combo with the Team All Star TAS 843STR 7' tube rod I've matched it with in the photo above. The gold-hardened chrome guides on the rod look especially sharp with the gold and Titanium highlights on the President reel.
Pflueger also has a completely new spinning reel for 2005 that is all metal - the Medalist. I haven't tried that reel yet, but it looks like a reel that will stand the test of time and big water like no other.
