I've been experimenting with adding scents to my soft plastics. I figure if it smells plasticy to me, it would be a turn off for the fish.
I've been using garlic scented spray with some pretty good results. My buddies used to tease me that I would only catch the Italian fish that way. After watching me, they all have garlic in their tackle boxes too. I tried the Berkley pre-scented baits a few years ago. Last year, I started using some of the Yum products, also with good success. For me it seems like they hang on a little longer, and in some cases, I think they pick it up when they normally would not have. Do you guys use scents? If so, which ones seem to work the best for you? Under what conditions? I was thinking of trying the crawfish scent for St. Clair smallies. Opinions?

I use scents on most presentations, not just softplastics. I've had a lot of success using MegaStrike the past two seasons. I really like how long it lasts when it is applied and it doesn't get all over the boat (or your partner if he is down wind) like spray scents do. I started using smelly jelly liquid last year and have had some good results as well. Their craw scent is really strong.

I like the Smelly Jelly in minnows and crayfish. I like the Berkley Power jell too, but it's hard to find in the green bass scent. I still have a few left. I've had the most consistent results with that one. I've tried a few other scents the past few years without getting real excited.
I like the jells and pastes because I sometimes use them on jerkbaits and crankbaits too. They seem to work better and longer than spray and liquids.

I really like the Mega Strike as well. I have been fishing with it for the past few season. I would highly recommend giving it a shot. the main reason i like it, other than it lasts a long time, and its not very messy to apply, is that it gives your baits a nice slime coat. everything a fish eats has a slime coat so this makes your bait seem more natural when a fish bites. I know a guy who swears by Pam cooking spray, Garlic flavor. its all he uses, and he catches the bajesus out of them. PoorBoy himself

Personally I don't use scents at all. Mainly because I use plastics that all have scent or salt impregnated into them. I tend to view hard baits as mainly reactionary baits, so I don't really see much of a benefit in using scent on them. (just my opinion)
The other big reason I don't use scent, is that it tends to stink up your boat and dirty up the carpet. There are supposedly some scents that don't stain the carpet, but they still stink up the boat and even though they are water solueable, I don't have the time to wash the carpet all the time. So I don't let guys use scent on my boat at all. Most guys understand and are cool with it because they generally understand that even the most careful of person will eventually get scent on the carpet or worse...the electronics. It is my understanding that the spray type scents can actually damage the screens of your electronics. I'm not sure how true this is, but I'd rather not be the one who finds out.
I had one guy actually spill a tub of the jelly type scent on my carpet. That was pretty much the day I decided to be a jerk about it and outlaw scent on my boat. People just don't treat your stuff like it were their own.

I can understand that man, i had a boo boo in 03 on KY lake. I drew a guy my age and we decided to use his boat, at about 11:00 am, i accidentally sat on a freshly opened tube of mega strike. wanna talk about a stinky mess. he was cool about it tho, every few minutes he would toss his 10" black rubber worm into the pile on his carpet to 'refresh' his bait. he even commented that it was much easier than asking me for the tube all day. in the end, it washed right up and although i felt horrible about it, was happy he was so understanding. but needless to say, if i am on someone elses boat, i dont even use it ( unless its cheetams boat ) Heres a tip for anyone thinking about using Mega Strike. When you get out first thing in the morning when its 50* out, it will be tough to squeeze from the tube because the gel is firm. you really gotta apply pressure to get it out. But just remember two hours later when its 70* to be careful when you squeeze. Out of habit you will want to really push on it and you will make a nice stinky mess. And one more tip, if you do use your fingers to apply the gel to your baits, think twice before sticking that finger in your nose later. I promise you it will ruin your day! PoorBoy himself

Ok, just to show you that a person can change and have an open mind, I'm gonna give Mega Strike a try. My understanding is that it's kind of like a toothpaste style application and relatively clean for your boat. But don't pick your nose when it's on your fingers right? I tried to find some at Outdoor World, but they don't carry it. Where locally can I get a tube so I can give it a try? "If I can change, then you can change, we can all change!" - Rocky Balboa.

another you might want to try is carolina lunker sauce. it comes in a "bingo" type dobber applicator tube. really no mess involved, they actually recommend putting some in a baggy and marinate your plastics on the way to the launch then use lures out of the bag so the bottle never even comes out. I use it and haven't had a problem. as for the megastrike i know i've seen it at D&R but not sure about anywhere else. Maybe try to order online.

i think you can get it at Dicks, and i think i remember seeing it in the red dragon tackle trailer. I always order it from the website. you can order one tube from 7.95 or 3 for 20.95. i think its free shipping too. well worth it to buy 3 tubes, your friends will steal at least one from you. We had a LOT of fun with the word filter a while back during the dead of winter... (me especially trying to get it to do its job well)
That's what you get with a free, low maintenance forum...
I'll have a new one eventually, but it may not be until next winter (the fish are biting).
