Well, not BFL exactly, but it's close enough - the Detroit River EverStart. Day 1 today with a bunch of BIG weights on a rare calm day.
I don't want to jinx him, but my good friend Ben Felton is in 8th place with 19-8.
A great weight. He feels good about tomorrow. There are 3 ounces between the angler ahead of him and the 2 behind him. 6 boaters have over 20 pounds with just over 22 pounds leading. He's on the fish to make the cut and stay at the top. I'm rooting for him.
Go get 'em Ben!!!

Those weights are crazy! The cut was 36lbs, thats just not fair. The pic of Ben had a few dead fish, I would guess he had more weight with the penalty. Great job! The guy with 22lbs didn't even make the cut, it's funny how the same faces always show up at the end. -Matt

Ben had 2 dead fish the first day. They were fine when he got in the Detroit River and then they died quickly. This happened to Derek and me a couple years ago where our 2 biggest fish died quickly after we got in the river. I remember a weird smell near Ecorse so I'm thinking we hit some bad water coming out of the factory row.
Ben told me he finished 23rd after the storms Wednesday night seem to have shut down his larger bass. He had 14+ which is still a good weight, but as you say the cut was huge.
Where did you see his picture? I never saw it.

I had that happen to me twice this year with the dead fish, all were bigger fish. I have my wells plugged when I'm running so that river water wasn't a factor but I know the smell. I've been fishing very deep this year so that may have something to do with it along with the hot summer. The pics are on the flwoutdoors.com, when looking at the results click the pictures tab and then click all to see all of the pics. -Matt

I had the same problem - My pro Kim Stricker had 1 die, as well did I. It isn't river water, as we went north to fish from the Launch. It seems the heat, as well as the deeper fish bloated up right after catching them - not sure why - we put rejuvinate and ice in teh well right as they were caught. I went from Hero to Zero overnight - almost 14lbs less the penalty day 1 had me 27th - and hopes of a great day 2. Instead, the draw I had matched me up with a guy with nothing going - no idea of what to do, or where to go. And me - leaning a big lesson - no boat, no GPS coordinates. After a few frantic phone calls for help, I got a few spots out in eerie - guess what? I felt pretty good seeing Clapper out in the same area, but nobody home but the trophy sheephead - fun to catch, but not part of the plan. Well, slipped down to 93rd - points is points. Its off to Lacrosse - any ideas on what to look for there?

So you cheated in the Everstart? You used your cell phone locate fish because your boater didn't have fish, what BS. Here is the rule from the Everstart site on cell phone use: The use of mobile communication devices, including, but not limited to, cellular telephones, marine radios, walkie-talkies, CBs, etc., during tournament hours is strictly prohibited except in an emergency (severe weather, etc.) or to communicate with lockmasters.
Thanks for being an honest cheater!

If he talked to other people also in the tournament and did not call them while on the water during the actual fishing hours, I don't believe it's a violation. That rule is generally meant to keep anglers from checking on fishing information from people on the water while the fishing is actually going on. I wouldn't speak specifically for EverStart without asking the tournament director for his interpretation.
Any rule about getting information from non-competitors once the tournament starts would be more applicable if the person(s) he talked to where not in the tournament. I don't remember EverStarts version of that rule.

NOWHERE IN HIS POST DOES IT SAY HE MADE THE CALL(S) WHILE ON THE WATER DURING TOURNAMENT TIME! It read ( at least to me ) like he called some people after the second day pairing, the night before the tournament. Dowd, get a grip man. you cant just come out bashing someone and calling them a cheater, which you know is the biggest black eye in this sport, if you do not know the facts. I would think someone who has been tournament fishing as long as you have would extend a bit more courtesy to a fellow angler. This is the exact reason i spend 10x more time on dans site rather than lscn. People bashing other people is BS. keep it off the web, or at least keep it off this site. I like it here, and would like to stay without having to deal with all the drama that a handful of people seem to need to get by on a daily basis. delete your post or issue an apology. be the bigger man. I would definatly have to agree with you poorboy. I really think that bashing him like that was uncalled for. What proof do you have he cheated. Did you see him on the water with the cell phone? NOPE! YOu didn't! You could have just found out for sure first if it was before fishing time or what the real case was. Just seems like another case of jealousy to me!
