How'd you guys do? I only managed to get one fish each day. It was only my second time fishing the river, we were on fish but my inexperience got the better of me,as my partner ended up culling 2. Second day, we stayed out of the river, and had a blast. I only got one keeper, my partner got 4. But we each got a walleye, and I got a big pike. I hope y'all did btter than i did. I only had about 6lbs. for both days.

I fished the worst I've done on St. Clair in about 5 years only weighing 5 bass for less than 10 pounds. Never got on the upriver toads at all. I didn't have enough practice to work things out I guess.
I had a lot of bites downriver on Friday, but they were biting short. I lost a bunch of tube tentacles and grub tails to small keepers - I saw many of them follow my lures to the boat. Many of the followers seemed lethargic.
I spent half the day upriver with no bites up there. I stayed near the channel mouths and ran to the south shore and Mitchells Bay on Saturday. I only had 3 keepers on all day, losing one at the net. I was too nervous and got a little sloppy at the net. That sometimes happens when the fishing is slow.
That's about as shut down as I've seen fish over there. A friend told me things were similar out on Erie Saturday in some spots. There bass were there (they looked on the camera) but not biting. I'm sure I could have kept working at it and figured out something eventually. I just seemed to be less creative than normal this weekend.
Luckily, there's always next year (usually).

I disagree about the lethargic bass. We fished the river Friday, and the fish were HAMMERING the lures (too bad mine weren't keepers). We fished Grassy Saturday, and my partner and I couldn't believe how hard they were hitting. They nearly ripped the poles out of our hands.

Andy know how you feel. 14th place less than a pound out! Realy disapointed after weighing 18 pounds on Friday. Always next year.

Ouch! 14th place is like kissing your sister (as the saying goes - or brother I guess since we had several lady anglers participating too). I think I've finished 14th 2 or 3 times. So close, you have to take some satisfaction out of that.
Andy, I knew you were close too. Sorry you missed it.
I wasn't even close and I didn't have the mean bass mark had. I did have one pretty aggressive bass Saturday yank my spinnerbait, but I basically tricked the other two into grabbing the back treble of my expensive (and apparently overpriced) jerkbait at the boat. (I do wonder if I should share with mark what one of my old mentors - Big Fish Chip - taught me many years ago - little fish are liars- never believe what they 'tell' you.)

(I do wonder if I should share with mark what one of my old mentors - Big Fish Chip - taught me many years ago - little fish are liars- never believe what they 'tell' you.) That didn't prove true on Friday. My 3.5lber came on the same technique/color as my 2 dinks. And my partner's 14lbs. came on the same color and tehcnique. But I know what you're saying. True most of the time.

Yeah - there's nothing in fishing set in stone (until maybe we teach smallies to read...) and Big Fish wasn't always right.
He used to tell me things like, "Chicks dig me!" (I think he was saying this before Bill Murray, but I can't prove it... and Bill added the 'because I hardly ever wear underwear' line.) I never actually saw tons of chicks digging him (okay, there's Beth and Becky), but he is still one of my hero's. He taught me many other things... I might have made the team if he had been there to coach me last weekend. Who knows.

i know typically the state championship moves geographically around the state as to not offer any unfair advantages, but in talking to some of the MBF board members a few months back there were some mumblings about keeping the state fish-off on St. Clair and connecting waters year after year, because of the dominant participation vs. other areas. has anyone heard the same or has any locations been brought up for 2006 yet?

I have heard BASS is going to do away with the current Federation qualifying system and that next year it will all change.

Hey blakstr1, Did not have the opportunity to go to the meeting today. For us West siders it is a lot of driving in a day. Am also very curious as to how the meeting went. Should have been dicey. I would like to hear where the Championship and the Classic Series lakes are.

Blake,
I went to the Presidents meeting yesterday, I said hi to Dan, who buy the way was awarded a nice "Environmental" DNR patch for all of his efforts. Everybody gave him a nice round of applause. As far as your questions, I know for sure that none of the proposed changes were passed. There was only two of them that were voted on. As far as the lakes for the Classic series, nothing is set in stone yet. From what I remember, Mark Smith said that we had received monies from the Chamber of commerce from Charlevoix and Saginaw bay Au Gres, there was some discussion of Muskegon and Cadillac Mitchell too. But Mark was not willing to say anything was for sure.
As far as the State Championship goes, again nothing was picked, but the discussion was focused on a launch to accommodate the number of boats and also a body of water that would draw the most anglers. There MAY be something where each club gets a vote on few predetermined lakes. The waters discussed were Saginaw Bay (Midland ramp in the river), Lower Detroit, and I think.... don't quote me... Houghton Lake.

blakstr1 - the state championship dates are probably set in stone now - just not the location. See this thread for more information from the meeting this past Sunday.
