O.k. i have a club tourney on this lake this weekend. I know its a shallow weedy stump filled mess of a lake. Whats would be your way to attack this lake? I pre fished it (if that's what you want to call it) last weekend and only caught 1 keep out of some lilly pads in the river channel. But did catch a lot of smaller fish on the main lake points. The keeper was a good four pounds, the others couldn't add up to that. Should i go straight to the river and try to pull a couple of hogs out of the lilly pads or should i stay on the main lake and try to squeeze a limit out of smaller fish? By the way watch out for jet ski cops on this lake. I didn't get a ticket for towing a bass boat that wouldn't start because "Your lucky I'm in a good mood"

bad boys, bad boys, whatchya gonna do, whatchya gonna do when the jet ski towards you. water cops are the worst. i have had a few experiences and they all went the same way. a water cop threatened to give me a ticket for a law he had just made up in his head and then let me off with a warning, but told me that next time i wouldnt be so lucky. cant help you with the lake. i am a horrible horrible fisherman ;D PoorBoy himself

Go for the small limit first and them see if you can up grade with some bigger fish. Thats what i would do.

Been there many times. Most of them not by choice. I do kinda like it though because I love fishing the slop.
This lake can fool you. I have caught some good limits out there (12 - 15lbs) But they're there one day, gone the next (usually gone on tournament day -LOL).
The best advice I can give you is to stay alert and confident. Even if the morning bite is completely dead, this lake has a good late morning / afternoon bite that can come anywhere at any time. The big fish scream out of the weed mats and will smash a lure when you least expect it. Don't get caught sleeping. They'll break your heart. (happened to me, had to have been 7 pounds)
Pads are a good bet, but I've done better in pads off the lake than in the river. (there have been exceptions)
Open areas on the edges of the weed mats in the middle of the main lake is where I've mostly found the late bite and the big fish. Cover a lot of water and... Topwater, topwater, topwater. Alternate with a texas rig or carolina rigged worm on top of the submerged weedbeds. Especially if the top bite is slow.
Good Luck,
Dave

It's been a few years since I've been there. I've done well in the river, fishing pads on the Wolf Lake end. If there's enough water, I would target the back side of the pads, especially where they grow right next to other types of weeds, arrowheads in particular. Sound like a magazine? Don't laugh, it works here. Wolf Lake can be pretty good, too. Also have done well throwing spinnerbaits in the channel coming away from Michigan Center. Throw big stickbaits (Spooks, etc.) at the mouth where it opens into Center Lake. I'm sure that there are some other things that work as well, or better, but these always worked for me. Hope this helps and Good Luck!

It didn't go too well on Sunday. Ran a short distance across the lake and set up shop. First cast landed a 16" keeper on a fluke. What's the rule? Never catch a fish on the first cast! Should have followed that one. The next cast caught a 13" fish which started a trend we couldn't shake. Must have caught 40 largies between the two of us. All went between 12" and 13 3/4". All our fish came in the main lake on the tops of weeds. Most came on flukes with a couple on Yamamoto twin tail grubs. Just couldn't get anymore to stick. Blue bird sky's along with the cold front probably didn't help to much. From talking to the guys on the dock it seemed like it was the same for everyone. I will say that all the fish were healthy and strong. You'd catch a 12" and it would run into the weeds, felt like a keeper every time. Oh well had fun anyways. Next time out, I'm gonna make a short cast and reel it in really fast. Got to get that first cast out of the way! ;D

That 'getting the first cast SAFELY out of the way' idea could make a great fishing tip article...
