Try flinging spinnerbaits across that long shallow bar on Big Portage down towards the opposite end from the boat ramp.
I've only been there once in the past 3 years. Got a few really nice smallies there on a breezy day.
I used to like to fish the sunken islands on Big Portage for schooling largemouths. Haven't tried that in a looonnnnggg time.

If you go to the right after launching there is a nice sandy/rocky drop ( on portage ). I have only been to this lake once, but this is where the bulk of my fish came from. I used a white crankbait ( 6 foot diver ) and slaughtered 16 inch smallmouth from this spot all the way to the long point. Just keep following the break and cranking. The large hump in the middle of the lake ( towards the back ) produced a few fish, but they were all better fish. Senkos and tubes in watermelon and natural craw. a 3lb and a just under 4 lb smallie and a few 2.5 - 3 lb largies. Also, the canals produced a monster strike on a buzzbait, but the fish missed it. we saw a ton of keeper largemouths back there as well. I wish i was more familiar with the lake so i could explain these spots better. But i have only been there once. Hope it helps. PoorBoy himself

Thanks for the info. I was looking at my maps and big and small portage look like my best bets. Bill

Is this a club tournament or an open? I was thinking about fishing Top Bass on Wixom that day but would reconsider for one on the Portage chain.

This is kind of weird but here goes. Washtenaw Bassmasters was going to have a tourney on chemung but changed it. They are now trying to have a two day open. The first day is on the portage lk chain and the second day is on the halfmoon chain. I don't have all the info yet but will keep you informed. This is a team tourney. I'm fishing alone how about you Hooksetter.

I like the possibility of a two day tournament, especially on two different bodies of water. I know both of these chains better than I know Wixom Lake. If it is a 5-fish limit, I would fish alone. I have a bunch of fliers from the boat shows, I'll see if I have a flier from them.

I do not have a flier from Washtenaw Bassmasters and I can't find a website or an e-mail address. Don't overlook Baseline on the Portage Chain. It has some decent LM and SM in it.

I will probably get out to Portage on Thursday after work, Half Moon on Tuesday after work, if there is no off limits. I will be in Ludington this weekend.
