Go under fishing reports Dan has a very good report from Houghton.
I fished it last summer and found some flats in the middle of the lake with scaddered weeds. I would drag a 4 inch worm behind the boat and catch one fish right after another. The flats were in 8 feet of water adjasent to deeper water. I would have to go throught about 10 fish to get a keeper.
Dan might be able to give you some help on getting bigger fish.

Andy, I've never spent much time on smallies in the summer (after spawn) and fall up there. Just haven't fished it that much since I started learning more about the little brown bassies. I can't help much there and I've always heard that the big smallies are mostly caught in the fall with consistency.
I would think it's possible with enough time to get on them, but largemouths would be faster if you don't have a lot of practice time. There are a lot of docks on the lake. I also imagine that the deeper canals have homebody bass in them after the spawn attack goes away. The big deep canals like the one by the Cut River and SE East Bay would be good. I remember one summer tournament was won on largemouths caught from the sandsucker hole near the south MDNR ramp. Check out the hot spots map.
The sand drops and sandsucker holes from the Cut River over to Long Point may be the best bet for getting on any number of quality smallmouths if you want to try. They usually aren't that deep, but if the water clears and the weeds don't thicken, the early bite would be important.
Like I reported, North Bay has almost no weeds this year.
