This year was the litmus test for the new ESPN Outdoors Bassmaster Series, and BASS must have considered it a success – it added 40 new events to the 2006 schedule. The total number of Series events is now 120. (Note: For full schedule, see below.)
The 2006 season will feature six regions with five divisions, but each division will have four tournaments instead of five. Each divisional tournament can still accommodate 200 boats, and the Top 30 boaters and non-boaters in each division qualify for the regional tournament. The Top 8 from each regional then qualify to fish the National Championship. The winner of the Championship receives a berth in the 2007 Bassmaster Classic.
Series director Bruce Mathis said, "We are very excited about the ESPN Outdoors Bassmaster Series for 2006. Based on the feedback we received from anglers throughout the 2005 season, we have expanded our schedule to cover a much larger area of the country and reach an even greater number of anglers."
BASS also announced the events will feature a bigger prize purse. Each event offers a total purse of $55,055 (boaters and non-boaters combined) in cash and merchandise. Winning payout for boaters is $7,500 ($3,750 for non-boaters). Those figures are based on a full field. BASS stated that overall, it will pay "30 percent of the field in 2006, up from 20 percent in 2005."
The Series will also keep the shared-weight format, but non-boaters must now weigh at least one bass to share the weight of their boaters. "We listened to angler feedback and they indicated the importance of this new standard," Mathis said.
> Those who pay to fish in all four divisional tournaments but do not qualify for the regional may fish the second-chance tournament. The Top 8 boaters and non-boaters in the second-chance tournament qualify to fish the Championship.
> Entry fee for boaters is $250 per events. Non-boater entry fee is $125.
> The six regions are: Northeast, Northern, Midwest, Southeast, South Central and Southern.
