MDNR Director Rebecca Humphries signed the fisheries order after the 11/3/05 Natural Resources Commission meeting making our first statewide spring catch-and-release bass season official.
In 2006, you will be able to legally catch and immediately release bass statewide including the Great Lakes from the last Saturday in April until the regular existing opening days in the Lower Peninsula, and from May 15 until regular opening days in the Upper Peninsula.
There will still be a few special areas such as Hog Island, the Sylvania Tract and Wakeley Lake to name a few of the well-known special fishing areas that will still have special seasons. See the new 2006-2007 fishing guide that will be out later.
Also, the 6 long-standing spring test lakes (Pontiac, Cass, Kent, Holloway, Muskegon and Hardy) revert to the above new statewide season instead of April 1.
This is a great start for all Michigan bass anglers.

This is great news for us. I'm glad to have be official. It's a bummer to lose 3 weeks in April, but it's gonna be great to be able to legally fish the great lakes in May and June! It's a trade-off, but well worth it. I still think they should have kept the 6 lakes open all April though, but oh well. Can't wait for April to get here!!!

Speaking of waiting for APRIL!! don't know if anybody saw it last night but on OLN, (Angler on Tour) Joe Thomas had Gerry Gostenik out fishing bedding smallies from last spring, (I know the lake, I saw them during a club torunament)...but just to see those fish and watch them sight fishing especially since it was an area I recognized...i'm all pumped up, its going to be a LONG offseason!!
