Hey Dan, I'm writing a paper on why the mdnr should open bass fishing during the cold water periods. I need three good reasons why, the problem is they have to be short for a claim statement. Any help would be appreciated, Matt

Are you talking about catch-and-release or catch-and-keep?
If catch-and-release, then -
1) Studies have consistently shown bass have a dramatically higher release survival rate close to 100% in cold water (even in catch-and-delayed-release - tournament;
2) No studies show prespawn bass fishing to be bad for bass populations - and most states actual experience support this - making that part of the cold water season a great opportunity to increase bass fishing;
3) Closed bass seasons are not generally accepted management practices and have not been shown to be necessary to protect bass populations including study by Mark Ridgway in Ontario that showed claiming a fixed event like an opening day to protect a changing event like a bass spawn is questionable at best.

Thanks Dan, that should get me going.

I'm in the process of going back over my information I've collected so far. I'll add something if I come across anything helpful to your request. I'll be talking about the season briefly at the next federation meeting since Ron will be on vacation.
