Boy it must've been about three years since I have been to Ford Lake. I think last time I was there was in 2003 in the fall. All I could remember was some great fall fishing out there.......and I was right.
I launched about 0700 at Ford Lake park. Water temp was about 52 degrees at the launch. I set out toward the west. The air temp was 38 according to the temp on the overhead console in my RAM 1500 pick-up on my way to the launch and yeah "It's Got A Hemi". Well I started out at a subtle rocky point on the very west side of the lake by the golf course and caught a nice 4lb smallie over there on about the 7th cast of the day on a crankbait. It was the only fish I caught there. Water temp here was 49.
I moved down to the bridge by I94. The Visteon plant wasn't moving any water so usually that is a sign that there will be no biters. I have always caught good fish there when the plant is pulling water. And I was right. No biters.
I then moved out to a point that was directly east of my starting spot along the north side of the lake. I wacked four smallies there. All keepers including a 3lber. Water temp was 49. As the wind picked up, the bite got better as I boated an additional 3 fish in the 14 to 16 inch range. Schoolies. This lake always has schoolies this time of year. So if you catch one.....you can catch many.
I moved to the next point east on the north side of the lake and didn't get a bite. I moved point to point along the north side of the lake. I had gone about an hour doing this and did not get a bite. As I moved east, the water temp increased. The last point I fished on the north side directly across from the launch water temp was 51.
I decided to try a spot on the south side of the lake over toward the west. The water temp was 50 here. I started out fishing the slack side of this point and caught nothing. As I moved toward the windy side of the point I caught a small bass. Then on the next cast the action picked up. More schoolies in the 14 to 16 inch range. I caught 7 here all in that range and the 8th was that small one I caught first here.
I then moved to the next point to the east and caught 4 fish there. They were all in the 13 to 14 inch range. Water temp here was 50. All the fish were caught on the windy side of this point.
My last spot of the day did not yield a fish until I got to the windy side and then only caught 2. They were both about 15 inches. Water temp here was 51.
All in all it was an excellent day on Ford. Wind was out of the south and picked up as the day wore on. But alas so did the bite. Like I said, I always remember some great fall fishing on this lake. I put the boat back on the trailer at about 1400 hours and headed for the homestead more than satisfied by the great day of fishing I had. Oh by the way, all the fish for the day came on crankbaits. Nothing on a tube. Nothing on a worm, spinnerbait, jerkbait, or anything else. Crankbaits were the ticket here.............at least for this day. ;D
