I am late with this report AGAIN but here goes.
Started off Saturday morning before the tournament at about 4:00 AM. Got to the launch at about 6 and waited for light to launch the boat. I was off and running about a half hour later. Let me say running is a relative term. i say top speed for me was about 10mph in this stump infested lake. Having never been on the lake before and severe weather supposedly being on the way i stayed in the northeastern arm of the lake for my prefishing time. I soon let down the trolling motor and started fishing. Started off the morning with a black/blue jig with a crawbody trailer in grn pumk. Got my first fish almost immediatly after stopping. There were BIG bass busting the surface all over but with high winds forcasted for the next day i decided it would probably be better to stick with subsurface lures. The jig bite didnt seem to be the trick so i switched to a big double colorado bladed spinnerbait with a blue and yellew skirt. On my first cast I nailed a solid 2lber and the next i nailed about a 3lber. This was all before 8 AM so i was confident that this may be a good start for the tournament. I soon switched to a double willow leaf white 3/8 ounce Termin. spinnerbait. The results were the same. It was the best spinnerbait fishing I have ever done. This all took place by 10 am and i was happy with the results. I tried other things but the spinnerbait seemed to be the best. I looked for promising areas but soon realized that this lake is one big promising area. Every spot on the lake screams fish. I continued to fish and look for spots. The lake was like glass the entire time. It was an awesome day to be fishing. I knew it would be different the next day.
Tournament day started at 7 am. This was another draw tournament and I and my partner were on pretty much the same page with where we wanted to fish. The first hour of the day offered nice flat water for topwater fishing.I tried a white buzzbait with no luck. At about 8 am my partner missed a big bass on a popper only feet away from the boat. The sun came up the rest of the way and so did the wind at about 8:15. I picked up my white whillowleaf spinnerbait and started chucking in the wind, serious wind to. At 9am i nailed a solid 3lber and thought maybe my spinnerbait bite would come through. WRONG. I must have cast that thing a million times that day with no avail. My partner caught a 13 and 3/4inch bass at about 12:00. Caught a pike and a couple shortfish but that was it. At about 2pm my partner nailed our only other keeper of the day. It was a 4lb 4 oz largy. He caught it on worm on a mid lake stump. We had been trying everything all day and had cast or pitched to every stump we seen (which was a lot). We fished as hard as 2 guys can fish for the 8 hours and just came up short.
We each thought we had got smoked when we went to the weigh in. It turned out it was another real tough day. We ended up with 7lbs6.5oz. The winner had 13lbs with 7fish. 2nd was around 9lbs. (i think) 3rd was 8lbs 5ounces. We missed the "money" by 15 or 14 ounces. My best tournament so far. Definately was a little upset that i couldnt muster one more keeper fish in 6 hrs but thats fishing. There were a lot of good fishermen that didnt catch anything. Scored 90 aoy points for the second tournament in a row. All in all it was a good learning day and I had fun. Hopefully the next tournament doesnt take place in 3 and 4 ft waves like the last 2 have. But then again maybe im shooting myself in the foot by hoping for that
What do you guys try when the wind blows and all else fails. Any replies good or bad i would appreciate. Thanks
