My partner and I fished the Alpena Bass Club Megabucks tournament on Long Lake near Alpena. The tournament was Sunday and couldn't have been better weather for sight fishing..sunny and not much wind. We pre-fished on Saturday and marked many beds seen alot of fish so we felt good going into the tournament. We talked to some guys at the ramp and they said it took 21lbs to win last year (7 fish), so we knew the mark as well. There were 49 boats in the tournament and we drew blast off spot 42!? We had the first keeper within 25 minutes, then proceeded to catch a couple an hour for the first 4 hours. We caught our limit and we were sitting about 15lbs, so we knew we had to find some bigger fish. Then we found them! In the last 4 hours of the tournament we caught 40+ bass, and culled our way to 21lbs. There was one stretch that 5 cast brought in 5 fish all 2 1/2 lbs. Well weigh in came along and after all was said and done we ended up 15th. The winning weight was 23.5lbs. Unofficially all 49 boats caught limits and I only know of 1 dead fish. I believe Hardy Tulgestke and his partner finished 2nd only to be beat out by his son Jeremy and his partner. Of course they live on that lake! Anyway, great tournament, lots of fun, and great weather...a great way to start.

Fished Lakeville on opening day. Didn't do so well. Got only 2 small keepers. The beds were all empty, but we persisted in fishing shallow for most of the morning. Oh well, hindsight is 20/20. Tonight we'll be targeting dropoffs and slightly deeper fish. Blaskstr1, nice job coming in 15th. Sounds like you had an exciting day. Good job. Can't wait until St. Clair is open. I know lots of guys fishing Smallies on St. Clair right now and cleaning up, but I just don't feel right about it..Dang it.

I fished Houghton Lake the first two days, which is about my limit for days in a row on that lake. I caught a respectable number of smallies and a few largemouths. I left most of the bedding fish alone since they were taking a beating already. We decided to go over to Higgins Lake for half a day on Memorial Day - beautiful weather, but the water was still a little chilled and only a few bass were moving in shallow in the morning. We saw one on a bed and a handful of empty beds. Lots of suckers, but the only fish I got to hand was, of all things in this crystal clear water, about a 4 pound dogfish. We found some doggies moving in shallow to in thin number, probably looking for love, so here's my most 'exciting' picture from the weekend:

My partner and I fished the opening tournament of the Motor city inland division for NBAA on Lobdell Lake. There were 24 boats and we ended up taking 2nd place. We were third from the last boat at take off. We launched and headed to one of my good spots on Lobdell second cast and my buddy got our first keeper. From there we moved to another spot and he promptly got our second keepr about 2 1/2lbs. From there we headed back out to deep water where on a big crank he got our third keeper. From there we headed to another of my good deep water areas and I got our fourth keeper in a few casts. We had the four keepers by 9:30 the wind picked up and started to get a little chilly and the fish or the bigger fish sort of seemed to shut off. We had weigh in at 2:30 so at 12 we headed to my last spot on one of the connecting lakes. As we were heading in five boats were headed out. My partner looked at me and said well maybe this area is fished out. But my spot I have never seen a boat fishing. We headed to it. About my fifth cast I hit about a 14.0000000000001 inch fish kind of worried me the way the bite was going and him cutting it that close on our board. However, we didn't have to worry long very next cast I landed a 17 incher. Withing the next twenty minutes we caught 6 keepers and upgraded three of our first four keepers. So it was about 2 we headed back to the cove by the launch. Fished for about 10 mins and it started to thunder and rain. We hurried up put the boat on the trailer before everyone got in there. Weigh in came and we weighed in at 9.84lbs. First place was 13lbs and some change. They had two nice 3 1/2 lb fish. Those last fish that we upgraded with really came out to be big for us. It was the difference of second and the $500.00 that we won and 7th place and a tackle pack. So all in all it was a very fun day where everything just worked out for us. Alot of boats only had two or three fish. I think there were like 7-8 limits out of 24boats. So we felt good for the weather and us not fishing the lake since late last year to do as good as we did.
