Here's a report of some of the happenings at this past Sunday's (10/23/05) Michigan BASS Chapter Federation president's meeting in addition to what emeryj reported.
2006 Classic Series - lakes still open, but final decision will be reported at the December meeting.
Tournament dates are:
Jun 3-4
Jul 15-16
Aug 12-13
Classic Sep 29-30
Lakes for regular events being discussed are Burt/Mullett, Charlevoix, Cadillac/Mitchell, Saginaw Bay-Au Gres and Muskegon at the moment. I would assume St. Clair and/or the Detroit River would end up in there too. Classic lake itself still in very early stages.
Also, the federation purchased a new $800 6-tank compressor system from Aqua Ecosystems to improve oxygen/aeration in our release tanks. BASS helped arrange this purchase.
State Championship
Tentative dates are Aug 24-26 with no decision on lake although they were leaning towards Saginaw Bay out of Bay City Vets Park. Lots of discussion at the meeting on lakes.
Youth
CastingKids state championship will be in the summer this year instead of at the Lansing fishing show. Ron G is looking at a Saturday in July on the west side of the state. He will need a host club and a site.
Board vote
Doug Phillips was elected to a 3-year term. Mike O-Rourke was elected to a 2-year term to finish out Ron Spitler's term (Ron is 'retiring).
After the regular meeting, Doug Hedberg was elected the new president. Should be interesting. There were a few changes in appointments, but I don't have all of them written down - later.
Newsletter
Jay Berwick says we'll have a glossy large new newsletter out before the shows. Director Paul Wagner says he'll do the desktop publishing setup before it is sent to someone to print. After that, they are planning 3 newspaper issues at a reduced cost the rest of the year.
Boat Raffle
2005 - We made about $6,900 in profit. The boat and incentives will be the same for 2006. Tickets available later this winter.
Bylaws
Both bylaw changes - the board member non-compete clause and the regional state championship qualifiers proposal both went down in flames. I don't believe either change received a single yes vote.
Conservation
Ron Spitler was nice enough to give me a BASS Conservation patch as a reward. He reported on the bass season issue and the dropshot issue as we know them at the moment. Ron is waiting to hear from the fisheries chief on whether or not the Great Lakes will be open for catch-and-release on January 1 or the last Saturday in April.
Ron also asked that all clubs turn in the stats on the tournament form for their 2005 tournaments. Please - this information is important.
The final part of this topic and under Board appointments by the new president - I agreed to accept the position of Conservation Director (one I previously held from 1987 until 1996) as a non-board member with the knowledge that I can't attend all the meetings - especially national meetings this year. Dave Diennes is still on the board and offered to help cover some meetings. I may be able to talk Ron Spitler into attending the national meeting in January in Florida (yes - I'm passing up a week in Florida in January - I don't have the vacation time - and my wife would probably shoot me if I went without her).
