I dont know if you were planning on bringing someone else out tomorrow with you, but if you are why dont we just meet up out there. I will ride with Jeff and we will all stick together and find some fish. 2 guys per boat. And just to make it interesting, lets put $1000 on the line. whoever comes in with the biggest carp wins. If im fishing with the carp master, i wanna get something out of it. jk jeff PoorBoy himself

Do you think the carp will be stacked up like those smallies?

Craaaaaap! I wish I had read this. I ended up being pretty busy on Saturday and in my busyness, I left you hanging Poorboy. I hope you still got out and weren't waiting for me. I'd feel like a jerk if you didn't go because I didn't get back to you. SORRY ABOUT THAT. Anyway, Friday stunk for me again. I only got 2 and one didn't measure. The wind was howling and it as a tough day out there. Plus the low water level made launching and retrieving in the high wind fun. I guess I'm just cursed on this lake. Ugh!
BTW - It was amazing to see the carp stacked up over the deepest water in the lake. They were all on the surface getting some sun in schools of 20+ fish. I think there were no less that 20 such schools out there. It was kind of cool to see. You could get right up on them before they'd bug out.

No prob Rev. I ended up going out with Jeff. We didnt do great. I only caught one fish. It came on a shallow flat ( about 3 feet deep ) and i was diggin the bottom with a DT10 crankbait. I did miss a few as well, including two line breaks. the first was on a jig right under the bridge. I got a hit unlike any i have ever got. this fish hit so hard i was shaking. But my leader broke on the hookset. Five minutes later, i got another good take on a spider grub on a secret rock pile. I again broke my leader on the hookset. Something fishy was going on. I think i was setting too hard and the shock was breaking my flourocarbon leader. I shouldnt have been laying into them that hard using braid. Live and learn. We noticed a lot of fish were following and hitting our jerkbaits, but they just werent getting them. I watch a 2 lb largemouth follow mine to the boat and take a half hearted swipe at it. i never even felt it. Makes ya wonder how many fish were doing that throughout the day that you never seen or felt. I dont know what we could have done different to put a few more in the boat. Perhaps some tail feathers would have created more interest. Ill be back out there. I promise to report how i do. PoorBoy himself

Well, it's a bummer that you didn't do well, but in a strange way, it's good to hear that someone else had the same struggles I had that weekend. I would love to get out again. It looks like I might be able to this week. The weather doesn't look all that bad. I might be able to get out on Friday again. I won't be around unfortunately this weekend though because I'm out of town. If I do get out, I'll let you know how we do. If you want to get out the following weekend, I'd still like to spend a few hours with ya out there. Or perhapse we can do the 2 boat thing you talked about. I can bring a friend and we can work the lake in tandem. I like that idea. Catch ya later.

Here is the key...and it took way too long to figure it out:
Cast your jerkbait out...twitch twitch...pause...twitch...phone call from wife...long 30 second pause while talking to wife on cell phone...hang up...BAM!
LOOOOONNNNNGGGGG pauses (30+ seconds) in between jerks seemed to be the key. Had my wife not called when she did, I never would have figured it out. Also, we were working some heavy current, so the jerkbait was being pulled downstream as it was sitting there...I'm sure that was part of the equation as well. Look for the current, be patient, and you will catch fish.

Was that trick working on smallmouths or largemouths or both?

The jerkbait seems to bring up a bunch more smallies than largies, but we still catch some decent largemouth mixed in at times. I had one largemouth swipe at my jerkbait the other day that i know of. I got to see it. Last year in late november, my friend Tony and I came across a big school of hungy largmouth that were more than willing to take a suspended jerkbait. It was way east of the bridge, almost to the east launch. Way out in the middle of nowhere along the channel. We tried the same area a few more times days later, and didnt do well. PoorBoy himself

I have no doubt that's the key this time of year. I must have just been out on the wrong day or something because I was pausing up to a minute at a time. I'd drink some coffee, pick my nose, call my wife, then twitch the bait and still only 2 fish for a day's work. I need to get out there again!!! Man, I wish I could be in town this weekend. It looks now like I won't be able to get back out until Monday at the earliest.
