I had a Tournament on West Bay last Tuesday out of 19 boats five caught fish. First place was over 18lbs two Smallmouth over five lbs were weighted in. The water temp. was in the low fifty's, I went out on East Bay for a couple hours on Saturday the water temp. was 55 degrees. I spent most of my time driving around looking at different areas I have only fished the Bays three times and want to learn the different areas.

I haven't fished the place yet I moved to Traverse City last summer. With work and the kids my fishing time has been Saturday morning. I have heard a lot about Clam lake largemouth over the years it might be worth checking out. I am going to try to go to Skeg. next weekend the only problem is I will have about five people staying at my house that weekend. A couple years ago a friend of mine won a tournament on Skeg. where it goes into Torch. The wind was blowing hard and he used a white spinnerbait. If I can get to fish next weekend I will let you know what I find.

Just got a report from a club tournament from Elk-Torch - it took 25 plus pounds both days to win. That's 5 bass. 18 pounds didn't get you in the top 3 in that event. The bass have gotten bigger there apparently.

Dan
With that kind of weight I need to get to Skeg. ASAP. It takes me about 45 minutes to get to the launch off Baggs rd.

Only a few guys got the big weights which means they probably got them off of deep beds - my guess.
Elk/Torch should be coming on beds about now. There are some big bass in both, but 25 pounds for 5 bass is nothing to sneeze at.

I know that you can get into Belaire from that chain, is it worth going up there to catch them if Elk/Torch are shut down? Has anybody been on Belaire yet this year? How is it different from the rest of the chain?
THANKS!!!!

Bellaire has smaller, shallower flats overall with steep sand drops. There have been some really big bass caught out of there. It gets more local pressure, but still produces big catches at times. It's a long boat ride because of the no wakes, but tournaments have been won out of it before.

I haven't fished skeg or elk before but a pattern that seems to be working up here on the chain lakes for me is fishing small backwaters off the rivers. The ones that have a small canal with a big open lake area at the end seem to be the best. I would at least try some of these areas if nothing else is working. I have only been bass fishing a couple times this year but so far I have caught more bass fishing these kinds of spots than my usuals. I think the warmer water may have the fish in the feeding mode earlier than the spawners on the main lakes. I have seen some pictures on the internet of the chain your fishing and i seen some spots along the rivers and channels that looked good. I dont know if you can get 25 pounds but i have caught quite a few 3-4 pounders already this spring fishing these kind of spots. One more thing cant seem to go wrong with a strike king zero right now.

That zero is just another version of the senko, right? I will have to take look at those backwater areas. I won't be up there for a while yet, like late June early July. What sort of pattern will the fish be in at late June? I suppose there might be a few straggling bedders still poking around the shallows. Is Torch much cooler than any of the others beause of it's depth? I plan to check there first and hope for some sight fishing, if not I'll head for the warmest water I can find and hope they are done with post spawn!
Thanks.

Just got back from Elk/Skeg/Tourch. Fishing was pretty good. Had a two day club tournament, the first day it was won on elk, the second day was won on tourch. I fished tourch both days and caught spawning smallies. A lot on nice three to four pounders and one that went 5lbs. 3oz. It took about 18 pounds each day to win. First time I have ever been that and was really impressed with the fishing. Once you figured out were they were they were real easy to pattern and catch.
