Went pike fishing on Lake Ovid with Derek on Sunday for a few hours. Not too many choices local when you only have a few hours.
The pike population seems way down. I don't know if there are any muskies left yet since I haven't caught one in about 3 years.
Did see one boat trolling with large lures and even throwing big muskie jerkbaits. We mainly threw large willow spinnerbaits since I don't know a much better weed pike bait ever made.
About mid-morning, in about 6 to 7 feet of water near the beach over new green weeds (down 3 feet or so) Derek had a MONSTER pike slam the spinnerbait about 20 feet from the boat. AWESOME strike.
It ran at the boat and then when around the motor, ran away from the boat and came of in a froth of gill-rattling topwater surface-walking.
That was our only pike. We did catch quite a few bass from 10 to 17 inches just scattered all over the place. Too many bass in that lake to not catch some no matter what lure you throw.
Never did see the guy with the really big musky lures boat anything. Most other anglers where after panfish with not that many out from the wind and light rain early.
