got on the water just after 6:30. started fishing along some wind beaten shorelines. get this, second cast with a 1/4 oz ratl trap ( in the red craw pattern ) produced........a 16" rainbow trout?!?!?! i have put a lot of time into fishing kent lake for the past few years. i am out there 4-5 times a week on average. i have never caught, seen or heard of anyone else catching a trout in the main lake.
if thats not enough, 15 minutes later i catch the biggest pike i have ever seen taken in kent lake. it was close to 40". and completely swallowd my trap. a quick retie and i was back to fishing. this time we moved to the island in front of the fishing pier on the west side of the lake. one cast later fish on.
when i got this fish to the boat, i was dumbfounded. a 12" brown trout. so now, after catching one trout and thinking it was a complete fluke, i have boated 2 trout. sounds a little fishy right, i have proof luckily i had my good friend jay with me and he had a camera phone.
anyway, 3 fish but still no bass. i moved to a favorite spot of mine. the wind was really crankin through the area too. i positioned the nose of the boat into the wind and began casting. after 3 or 4 casts to the same area i hooked and boated a chunky 15" smallmouth. as i released him back into the water, my friend jay set the hook. after a good fight, he reached down and pulled a fat 17" smallie aboard. i was glad to see the fish finally putting on some weight. we continued working through the area, boating several nice smallmouth and a few largies as well.
once the bite slowed down on that spot, i cranked the big motor and cruised to another likely area. it didnt take long to hook into a nice largemouth ( i would guess the fish to be around 3.5 lbs ). we were working down the shoreline of a large island, picking up the occasional green bass along the way. once we got to the back side of the island, things got interesting.
in roughly 20 minutes, my friend and i boated 12 smallmouth. not one under 2.5 lbs. the biggest would be 4 lbs or better and measured 19 3/8". my biggest of the season ( so far )
all in all, a great day. started off a bit strange, with some unusual catches, but what a great finish. if any of you have a chance to get out there in the future, look for me. im the ugly kid in the red Ranger R93 with the 200 Merc. EFI. come by and say hi.
