Well, here's what I have to say about the Sunday, October 30th Last Chance / Ken Purvey Memorial bass tournament on Cass Lake - I didn't win.
I think Paul Soma did with 5 bass for 10.30 pounds, but cameraguy and I left just before they passed out the money.
Maybe it was the power of positive(?) thinking when I said I'd probably be a donater this year? Whatever it was, that's what I was.
I caught 2 small keepers deep on blade baits and that was it all day. We had a few dinks later in the day on jerkbaits and the blade bait. We even had a few small maybe keeper followers later, but never got in the swing of things.
We started on smallies and didn't fare well. We moved to largemouths and fared worse, so we went back to smallies. Like I say, we got around a few late along a couple drops, but things just didn't want to go our way.
There were very few limits this year. I know Scott Dobson and partner had a small limit besides national championship-bound Paul Soma.
Probably the most interesting thing about the day - it was pretty nice out even though a stiff breeze later tried to mess it up - was the weird stuff I kept catching on my blade bait throwing out deep while cameraguy alternated deep and shallow.
1) I first hooked a hard fighting fishing line with weighted fancy worm hook. I think whomever lost it lost all there line because it took me a while to 'reel' it all in. It had some gook on it too, but the hook wasn't that rusty yet. I snagged it out in 20 feet or so and it kept catching on gook so I thought I had a fish. Then a snag. Then nothing. And then a snag again. I hate leaving line in the water so I wadded it up and tossed it in a compartment.
2) I hooked another thing that snagged, then pulled loose. Then snagged again. Then came up from the depths with a slight drag. It ended up being a 4-foot long piece of green fuzzy carpet fiber laced with tiny zebra mussels.
3) A little later, another emptied fishing reel I guess. Another big ole wad of fishing line with a Carolina-rigged yellow (I think) Power worm rigged weedless at the end. I 'reeled' it all in and tossed it in the compartment with the other pile of line.
4) A while later, I set the blade bait hooks into something that barely gives and then stops solid. Can't be a fish. I put more and more pressure on it and it suddenly 'breaks' free and then slowly, heavily drags to the surface - a great big over-sized bath towel!! A little mud, but I decide not to keep it (I don't think cameraguy wanted it in his boat real well.)
5) I was talking about how I was approaching a record for weird things caught in one day on one lure. I don't know that I honestly said the only thing more weird would be if I caught a chicken bone or some such (but we are always joking about everything tasting like chicken - well, cameraguy always actually says everything tastes like bald eagle), but maybe a minute later, I set the hook - nothing. Well not really true. I can feel a little drag. Up comes - I'm not making this up! - a chicken bone hooked on my back hooke.
We gotta get out of here I say. Before I hook the rest of the @#$%@#$% chicken...
