Got back out this Saturday for a few hours. Fished from 8:15 am - 12:30 pm with my friend Tony. We decided to abandon the jerk bait pattern. It just hasnt been panning out this season like it had last season. As much as i wanted to make it work, we just havent been catching them like we did last year.
So i suggested we fish the bottom. Thats how we caught em last weekend so why not give it a shot.
We started out fishing some deeper stuff along the bridge. I was c rigging a hawg and Tony was draggig a jig. No bites this time around. I noticed the moon was still full in the sky at around 9:30 am. I commented to Tony that once it disappeared, we would start catching them.
We moved the boat to a nice drop off the channel and immediatly started marking big pods of baitfish. And of course, bigger predetor fish were showing up all around the balls of bait. Out came the jigging spoons. 20 minutes of drop and pull with no action. We even tried yoyoing a ratl trap through the schools.
Gave up on that and headed west to a nice point that dumps fast into deeper water. I had a good take on a c rig, but the fish quickly pulled free. Im guessing it was a smaller fish that didnt quite have the brush hawg all the way in its mouth. So i made a change. I tied on my new favorite Kent Lake bait, a custom hand tied bear hair jig. 1/4 oz black hair with purple silicone 'crawler' legs matched with a dark green pumpkin with purple pincer hand poured jig trailer. These i found online from conquistador tackle company. Unbelievable color combos to match any jig on the market. The jigs are made by a guy in Alabama. Anyway, we continued along the point. to my surprise, not really because it is Kent Lake, there was a ton of wood and rock way out in 11 f.o.w. The spot was fun to fish just feeling all the junk down there. But it was made even better as my friend set the hook on a willing 2.75lb smallmouth.
Next cast, i felt a slight pick up as i crawled my jig along the wood and rocks. I snapped my rod back and initially thought i was snagged. But then i felt the head shake. I wrestled the fish to the surface and seen the size. It was another 4+ lb fish taken on the bear hair jig. This time a largemouth. A few quick pictures and back in the water she went. I wish i knew how to work my digicam. Would love to post a picture of this beautiful fish. It is a true testament to the quality of Kent Lake as a fishery.
Anyway, the rest of the day was pretty slow and i had to be off the water to meet with a videographer for my upcoming sentence, i mean marriage.
Wierdest thing. I get to the guys house and see pictures of fish all over his wall. I know his last name is Bond, so i ask if he is related to an Eric Bond. Before he can answer, i spot a picture of Eric on his wall. Turns out Eric is the guys nephew. I dont know if any of you know Eric Bond, but he fishes a few tournaments here and there. Mainly BFL and Everstarts i think. He also fished in the ABA with us and won a few last season.
So, i got an extra $100 for being a fisherman, and another $100 for knowing Eric.
If that wasnt wierd enough. The guy shows us a wedding video that he had shot last year, to give us an idea of what he does.....Its a kid i graduated highschool with. Small world i guess. Sadly, I was not discounted for knowing this kid, but it was worth a shot.
