I needed to test out my prop today so I decided to fish for a few hours on St. Clair while I was at it. Not wanting to make a serious day of it or use a lot of gas, I just fished around Selfridge where I launched, then made my way down to some areas outside of Metro Beach, then fished a bunch of canals trying to find some shallow largemouth.
Selfridge is pretty heavily silted in, but when you're around the weeds the water is a little clearer. The weeds are starting to turn brown and there is a lot of floating grass right now which made it hard to make a good presentation. Saw lots of batfish. No bites around Selfridge.
We moved down to the Metro Beach area and fished some structure in about 8 ft of water. Again, no takers except for a perch. We decided to goof around in the canals and finally got something going. We got a couple 2 pounders and a dink right away. The water was pretty dingy in the canals, but there were still some resident largemouth willing to bite a deadstick presentation.
All in all for just a couple of hours out there we did better than I thought we would considering the water quality. Not sure what a report like this does for anyone, but it might be fun to take the kids out and do a little largemouth fishing. I always like this time of year when the fish start to move to shallow structure.
