What a weekend! my second time salmon fishing ever and i showed all of my friends up. i couldnt help but hook into one on just about every drift. i am a salmon fishing god.
on a serious note. it was one heck of a good time. we fished the pere marquette river the first day ( friday ) and hooked into many fish. those fish were strong. stronger than the ones we caught last year. the term of the day was 'fresh'. i learned that a fresh fish was a fish that hadnt been in the river long. full of fight and with a bad attitude, those fish took all of us for a ride. i hooked into one that a local said would have been in the mid 20 range. i dont know how true that is, but most of te fish were around 15 to 18 lbs.
the area we were fishing was full of stumps, logs, trees, bends, rocks, snags, etc so we decided not to fish it again the next day. instead we would head to the little manistee river.
saturday we packed up two trucks and headed to the little man. when we got down there, i rigged up a got my line out there. hooked into a spunky mother right away. this fish jumped at least 6 times and and took off so far up river that he ( or she ) was two bends ahead of me by the time i caught up. i fought the fish for a good 15 minutes on a loaner 8 weight st croix fly rod. just when i thought i couldnt hold the rod any longer, the fish gave in. i pulled slowly towards me while walking and reeling towards it. as my friend reached down to tail grab the fish, it gave one last kick, pulled a few clicks of drag, and then snapped my leader.
the rest of the day went pretty much the same way but we did manage to land two fish on saturday. both males. one 15.5 lbs on a boga grip and the other just under 18 lbs.
we couldnt fish for very long on sunday because we had to pack up and head home, but we made it back to the little man for a 3 hour adventure. this time there were only 5 of us. we all hooked into fish, but only landed one more.
all in all it was a blast. my second time salmon fishing and i am definatly hooked. it is going to be an expensive habit, but rewarding at the same time. anyone who has not tried this type of fishing should give it a shot. fighting a 15 to 20 lb fish on a 9 foot fly rod in a river no more than 20 foot wide is an expereince to say the least.
